Solar Panel Efficiency Considerations For Every Consumer

Most homeowners want to install solar panels that will save them the cost of making another payment for electricity bills after installation of the solar panels. This is why most people consider the efficiency of the solar panels before going ahead with the installation. Although efficiency is not the only factor that affects the output of solar panels, it is still a major factor that needs to be considered.

Solar panel efficiency refers to the amount of energy produced by a solar panel if a certain amount of sunlight hits it within a duration of time. It is usually compared between two solar panels. This means that if two solar panels receive an equal amount of sunlight at a given time, the solar energy produced by each solar panel is its efficiency. A solar panel’s efficiency varies; however, most panels in the market are between 15% – 20% efficient. However, this is not absolute as there are some outliers in both directions.

Sunpower manufactures the most efficient solar panel in the market at the moment, and it has an efficiency of about 22.8%. There are also some other manufacturers, including LG, REC Solar, Solaria, and CSUN. All of these produce solar panels that are more than 20% efficient.

Considerations Before Purchase

The first consideration before installing a solar panel is the size of the roof compared to the utility in the household. If your goal is to reduce the amount of electricity bills you will be paying in your property, you need to consider your roof’s size before purchasing any solar panel. If your roof space is large enough to accommodate enough solar panels, you do not have to consider efficiency while purchasing the solar panel. However, suppose your roof space is not large enough to accommodate the number of solar panels that will offset your electricity bill. In that case, it is best you choose solar panels with higher efficiency.

Although, the volatility of the electricity bill and usage makes it advisable to consider highly efficient solar panels over monthly or annual electricity bill payment. Hence, choosing a solar panel with higher efficiency will pay off in the long run.
